For the past few years, my firm has been fortunate enough to provide various legal services to CWEE participants. I very much enjoy working with the participants and the support they receive from CWEE personnel is extraordinary.

By Lois Britton, GED Instructor
When a new participant enters the GED room, he or she is anxious to pass the five GED tests and move on with his or her life. Some participants prefer to work on their own, some like to work with partners. But most like to work with a tutor or staff person who can show them how to approach a math problem, or walk them through the steps to solve it.
We have excellent tutors in the GED room. Not only do they help with Reading, Writing, Social Studies, Science and Math, they are ambassadors to the community, raising awareness of CWEE’s programs. In addition, they have taken on other roles at CWEE:
As an employee of a major company, one tutor has advocated for CWEE to be a part of the workplace giving program at his company.
A retired Math teacher and sewing hobbyist has reached out to other groups for donations to use as incentives for CWEE participants—baby quilts are used as prizes for our Math for Life drawing each month, pillowcases are given to those who make presentations. This volunteer secured used sewing machines, fabric and thread for those who are interested in learning to sew after hours. Sewing is not usually considered a job readiness skill, but when one of our participants goes to interview for a job, she doesn’t want her pants pooling around her shoes.
A business consultant and child development expert teaches child development classes for CWEE on a two month rotation.
A business man conducts mock interviews with job seekers.
Our tutors “buy in” to the CWEE way and our values—they provide excellent instruction, they collaborate with participants, staff, and community members to help meet the needs, they serve with integrity, they are inclusive, and they think of innovative ways to help individuals learn and help CWEE prosper.
I've learned that you shouldn't go through life with a catcher's mitt on both hands; you need to be able to throw something back.
