Nine Graduating Students Honored by The Center For Work Education and Employment

Written by CWEE participant and GED graduate, Natasha Martinez

On June 3rd, 2011, The Center for Work Education and Employment (CWEE) honored 9 GED Graduates and several other participants who earned certificates in various computer programs such as Microsoft Word, Excel, and Power Point. The Continuation Ceremony was held at the La Alma Recreation Center across from CWEE’s building. It was an emotional filled day for the graduates who were able to attend with a room filled with their family, friends, CWEE staff and other CWEE participants.

At the ceremony, the graduates were able to say a word after they received their certificates. The biggest part was the GED help from the staff with that extra push and understanding needed. Family was also a common factor. One thing that really stuck was a quote from GED instructor Lois Britton who said “a lot can happen in a year” and that is the truth. There are several graduates who a year ago were just getting started with preparation for their GED. Some that thought getting their GED maybe was not possible and now here they are furthering their education! One participant is currently attending school for massage therapy and another who is looking into schools to become a surgical technician.

CWEE has helped many obtain their GED and has had a 50% increase from last year in obtaining their GED’s. Having a graduation ceremony to recognize what theses participants have accomplished makes it feel like an actual graduation and it gives people something to look forward to. Thank You CWEE for being the inspiration to give that push that may have been needed to further on a career path for a better future!

CWEE was established in 1982 and their goal is to assist low-income single families’ transition off welfare into secure sustainable employment. CWEE will be celebrating their thirtieth year next year. They continue to provide support to their participants in the Denver Metro area by helping to teach the skills needed to obtain and maintain employment. “I Thought I would never get my GED and if it was not for Lois, one of the GED instructors, giving the push I needed I would have never gotten it. The staff is very helpful and nice. It was a good ceremony as well.”

“CWEE participants work very hard for everything they achieve. Earning a GED is a milestone in their life and we are very proud of them.”
